This page describes the game you are using, including local play on this device. The operating company's registered name, company number, and registered office in England and Wales are not yet listed here. We will add them when they are ready. Until then, treat this as an honest product notice, not a completed Companies House disclosure.
Privacy policy
How Crown Wake Chess uses information on this device and, if you connect, on the hosted service. Last written 6 September 2026. UK English. No advertising trackers in this copy of the game.
1. About this page
Crown Wake Chess is a dark-fantasy 3D chess game for the browser. You can play locally against the computer, work through puzzles and campaign content, and use online features when the hosted service is available.
This policy is written for the United Kingdom. We aim to meet the UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018, and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR). It should be read with the Terms of service and the Fair-play policy.
We do not invent opponents, online status, or company details. Where a feature is not switched on, we say so.
2. Who we are
The product is Crown Wake Chess, offered at crownwakechess.com and as a progressive web app.
The legal person who will act as data controller under UK law is the operating company behind that product. Its registered name, number, office, and ICO registration are not published on this page yet. We will update this section when those details are complete. Until then, there is no postal address or privacy email listed here to avoid a fake contact.
If a Data Protection Officer is appointed, we will name them here.
3. What stays on this device
Local play does not need an account. On this device the game may store:
- Settings and preferences (board, sound, camera, accessibility choices).
- Local progress such as campaign or puzzle state that the game keeps in the browser.
- A short-lived sign-in session if you choose to sign in.
- A service-worker cache of app files so the game can load again without a full download.
That information lives in your browser (local storage and cache). You can clear it from browser settings. Clearing it may sign you out and reset preferences. It does not delete a hosted account by itself.
4. If you play online
Online play is optional. When you create an account and the hosted service is available, we may process:
- Account data: email address, a hashed password held by the authentication provider, a username, and a system user id. Passwords are not stored in plain text by the game.
- Game data: moves, results, time controls, ratings, puzzle scores, and similar play records needed to run matches and boards.
- Public profile: your username and rating may appear on leaderboards, in a lobby, or on a replay you choose to share.
- Chat and presence: messages you send, and a simple status such as idle or playing, so other players can challenge or watch. Chat is not private.
- Fair-play reports: reports you file, and reports that name you, with related game data.
- Technical logs: IP address, browser or device type, request path, and time, from hosting, used for security and reliability.
Casual friend games may use a peer-to-peer link. That can expose your IP address to the other player. That is how such connections work, not a hidden tracker.
If you open a replay or spectator page, the moves in the link or the cast stay in that browser session unless you share the link yourself.
5. Why we use information
We use information only to run the game you asked for:
- To keep settings and local progress on this device.
- To create and sign in to an account, when you choose to.
- To run matches, clocks, ratings, and replays.
- To keep play fair and to look at reports (see the Fair-play policy).
- To keep the service secure and to fix faults.
- To send essential account email such as a confirmation or password reset, when that path is live.
Under UK GDPR the usual bases are: contract (to provide the game you use), legitimate interests (security, fair play, reliability), and legal obligation if the law requires a record. We do not use your play for advertising profiles in this product.
6. Cookies and similar storage
This copy of the game does not set third-party advertising cookies.
Storage we treat as essential to a service you asked for:
- Browser local storage for settings, local progress, and (if signed in) a session.
- The progressive web app cache of game files.
If an anti-bot check is switched on at sign-up, that provider may set a short functional token. If we ever add non-essential analytics or marketing storage, we will ask first and update this page.
You can block or delete cookies and site data in your browser. The game may then forget preferences or need a fresh download.
7. Who we share with
We do not sell personal data. When online features are used, information may be processed by the providers that actually run those features, for example:
- A hosted database and authentication provider, for accounts and games.
- The application host and content network, for pages and logs.
- A payment processor, only if paid features are offered and you choose to pay. We would not receive your full card number.
- Other players, for the public parts of play you take part in (username, rating, chat you send, and in peer games your IP address).
Some providers may process data outside the UK. Where that happens we would rely on UK GDPR safeguards such as an adequacy finding or an International Data Transfer Agreement. We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to a buyer if the product is sold, still under this notice.
8. How long we keep it
- On this device: until you clear site data or uninstall the app.
- Account and play records: for the life of the account, then deleted or detached from your identity within a reasonable time, except where we must keep a record for security, fair play, tax, or law.
- Chat: treated as short-lived, except copies held inside a report.
- Server logs: a short period for security, then deleted or aggregated.
Exact day counts for hosted records will be published with the company details.
9. Your rights
If we process your personal data as a UK controller, you can ask to access it, correct it, delete it, restrict it, object to legitimate-interests processing, and (where the rules apply) take a portable copy. You can withdraw consent where we rely on consent, without affecting processing already done.
We do not make solely automated decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects about you in this product.
You can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk, by calling 0303 123 1113, or by writing to Information Commissioner's Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire SK9 5AF. We would rather hear from you first once a contact address is listed.
Until a contact email is published, you can also stop local processing by clearing this site's data in your browser and by not signing in.
10. Children
Crown Wake Chess is a general-audience chess game. It is not aimed at young children. Local play does not need an account. If you create an online account you should be at least 13, and if you are under 18 a parent or guardian should agree. Any future paid feature would be limited to people aged 18 or over.
If you believe a child has given us personal data without appropriate consent, wait for the published contact and we will delete it, or clear the data on this device yourself.
11. Payments and prizes
This copy of the game does not take card payments and does not run real-money prize competitions. There is no membership fee to play the core game.
If paid cosmetics, a one-off unlock, or similar are offered later, prices will be in pounds sterling (GBP) and will include VAT where VAT applies. A payment processor such as Stripe would hold card details. We would update this policy before any payment is taken.
Webcam or screen recording for prize finals is not used. It would not start without a further privacy update and a clear consent step.
12. Security
We use HTTPS in production, hashed passwords at the authentication provider, and server-side controls for ratings and official results when you play online. No system is perfectly secure. If a breach is likely to risk your rights, we would notify the ICO and, where required, you.
13. Changes
We may update this policy when the product, the law, or the company details change. The version on this page is the one in force. Material changes will be dated here, and we will try to tell signed-in players if that path exists.
14. Contact
Product: Crown Wake Chess, crownwakechess.com.
Company name, number, registered office, privacy email, and ICO number: not yet published. This sentence is deliberate. We will not invent them.
